For years our designers marvelled at the simplicity and pretty light of the Chinese lanterns in and around the old town of Shanghai. There, most people use them to light their front doors and hallways, mesmerizing our design team in the process. Until it dawned on them that some great designs scarcely need reinterpretation. They deserve to be honoured as they are. That is exactly what we did with this family of handmade light fixtures called Ming. Which means ‘brilliant light’. Another salute to these traditional wire and canvas Chinese lanterns. The handmade Ming lamp family brings homage to Chinese lanterns. Here people have been crafting lanterns by hand for many centuries. The case is made of braided steel wires in floral patterns. The untreated, raw canvas is glued to the inside of the steel case by hand. The translucent canvas in combination with the pattern of the steel case creates a mesmerizing light effect. That’s why we called this series of light fixtures Ming, which means ‘brilliant light’.
